Construction
The church and school of San Jeronimo was built in 1757 by the friars of La Merced without the necessary authorization and was subsequently closed. Most of the structures were destroyed by the earthquakes of 1773.
Architecture
Composed of thick walls, built in the traditional way: large stones as foundations and clay bricks joined with mortar and simple linear geometry carved in stucco. At the top there is still a colonial dome with a high octagonal pyramidal base. In the main courtyard there is an octagonal colonial fountain of carved stone.
Curious facts
It was used to house the Royal Customs House and a stable for the crown’s horses, although this last fact is not entirely confirmed.
From the parts that were left in ruins, material was extracted for the construction of other buildings.
Function
The ruins and the structure that is still standing serve as a tourist attraction.
The facilities are quite large and can be used as a stage for cultural exhibitions.
