Construction

The construction of the Church and Convent of San Agustín began on January 28, 1657 by the architect Juan Pascual.

Architecture

Renaissance architecture. The façade of the church has the image of San Agustín on the upper part. The rest of the frontispiece shows images of other saints. There is also a dome, a bell tower and luxurious altars inside. The convent had a two-story arcade. The earthquakes of 1773 caused its destruction, the dome and the main altar collapsed.

Curious facts

According to records, in 1938 it housed a carpentry shop and an oxen corral, but was vacated when Antigua Guatemala was declared a National Monument in 1944.

It was dedicated to the memory of Bishop St. Augustine of Hippo.

Function: It is in ruins and closed to the public.
