Foundation: The first cathedral is built in 1545, but due to earthquakes it collapses and is left in ruins. The present one is a work of José de Porres and Juan Pascual, inaugurated in 1680. (Gardín, Asturias, Valls, & Rodríguez García, 2017).
Architecture: Baroque style, designed with 5 naves, 18 side chapels all with domes, columns decorated with stucco. The façade has curved ornaments, with 15 images without counting the cherubs at the entrance. (Gardín, Asturias, Valls, & Rodríguez García, 2017).
Curious facts
It was considered the most beautiful and luxurious cathedral in Central America.
It preserves images of great historical and religious value such as the Señor Sepultado de San José and Nuestra Señora del Socorro.
In one of its crypts are the tombs of illustrious characters of the Conquest of Guatemala, among them: Bishop Francisco Marroquín, Pedro de Alvarado and Bernal Díaz del Castillo.
It contains a set of tunnels and vaults whose usefulness is unknown. (Guatemalan, 2017)
Function: The ruins of the former Cathedral function as a tourist site. The present church functions as a parish and religious services are held there.
Hours and admission fee
Ruins: from 9:00 to 17: hours. Admission for nationals Q 10.00 and foreigners Q 20.00.
Parish: from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., open to the public.
Location: 5 calle Oriente and 4 avenida Norte, in front of the Central Plaza, La Antigua Guatemala.
