Construction: The temple has suffered devastating damage since it was first built in the mid-16th century. In 1702 Diego Porres built the present church, but it was seriously damaged by earthquakes in 1717, 1751 and 1773. In 1961 to 1967 it was rebuilt and remained in operation. Architectural data: Baroque style, in the shape of a cross. Adorned by Solomonic columns. It has three streets and five bodies with niches of Franciscan saints. Two towers were located on the façade, the south tower with the clock, but it was no longer rebuilt, only the north tower with the bells remains. (guatevalley, 2017)
Sanctuary: It houses the remains of Saint Brother Pedro, the first saint of Central America. It is visited and venerated by many people who come to ask for a healing miracle.
Fun fact: In 1935 the ruins of the church were used to film scenes for the movie The New Adventures of Tarzan. (HoyhistoriaGT, 2019)
