Construction: Built by architect Joseph de Porres in December 1698. In the earthquake of 1751, the dome of the church was completely damaged, but it was rebuilt and restored. In 1773 it was abandoned due to the serious damage it suffered from the Santa Marta earthquake. (Cervantes, n.d.)
Architecture: The convent was built with an upper floor and a first floor. It consisted of corridors with brick arcades, vaulted vaults, vaulted rooms with coffered ceilings and terracotta tile terraces. (Mozas Roca, De León, & Chapero, 2007)
Curious facts
- With the arrival of Justo Rufino Barrios coffee enters Guatemala, the church and the convent are used for the roasting of coffee in 1871.
- Between 1912 and 1976 the church and the entire atrium became the Municipal Market of Antigua Guatemala. (Gabiela, 2017)
Function
- The church as a tourist attraction.
- Since October 16, 1997, the convent has served as the headquarters of the Ibero-American Training Center of the Spanish Cooperation.
