Convent and church of La Merced

Construction

It was designed and built by the architect Juan de Dios Estrada in 1749 and finished in 1767. (Cuyán Vásquez, 2015).

Architecture

It is of Guatemalan ultra-baroque style and has two bell towers. On the upper part of the façade there is an image of Saint Peter Nolasco, founder of the Mercedarian Order. (Cuyán Vásquez, 2015).

The immaculate saint of this temple is: Our Lady of Mercy.

Curious facts

Inside the convent there are some majestic sculptures of baked clay and glazed lions on the outside and inside some stucco and brick sculptures of Mercedarian saints: San Pedro Pascual and Santa María de Cervelló.
